I researched all types of locks carefully and finally settled on Walmart's $24 16mm BELL U-lock. worked fine for a month, then it took me 20m to unlock it and hasn't been exposed to harsh conditions (snow, rain, dust) during that time. There's nothing worse than wondering if you'll ever get home (or, in my case, back to the office for lunch after an errand) when you just can't open the glasses and you don't bend or break the key very much soft. The extra $45 hurt my pride and ego as I thought I would be fine with the BELL lock but the last 2+ months of using it has been surreal. bend/break something The weight and strength of this lock is far superior to the Bell lock which claimed similar performance (I also purchased an extended U-lock which was larger but overall the same weight). Attaches to bike very smoothly, not stiff or bulky to mount around bike stations. The peace of mind is priceless, I know it always opens and closes quickly and unhurriedly. The only problem. You must be near a suitable bike locking area as this is a standard sized U-lock. The extra long lock I had gave me more versatility and always allowed me to lock both the front wheel and frame to my rack/stand. Here you really have to choose your position or drop the front wheel and trust the cable (Abus 10mm flex cable) to get the job done. So far, so good.
