Review on 🚁 HUBSAN H501SS X4 Drone - Controller-Free Experience (H501S-36) by Jeff Ross

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent drone. There is a GPS and an altimeter. Incredible range. Have fun and barrage for the features you get!

Decided to add this first. This drone is VERY picky when it comes to SD card selection. I have LOTS of SD cards of different speeds and most didn't work at all and the ones that worked produced very choppy videos. Terrible. What worked was the Sandisk Extreme Plus MicroSDHC 32GB. This is a Tier 3 card with a drone icon. Format the card as FAT32. Whenever I move a map from the drone to my desktop computer, it always wants to scan and restore it. These are windows. Let him do it - everything will be fine. I'm attaching a photo of the SD card packaging because this drone isn't very interesting if you can't take photos and videos with it :) Let me just say that I lost 3 drones. I'm not a super drone pilot. The first two I lost were essentially toys — sub-$100 drones that flew but had no real functionality. The third drone I lost was actually one of them, but it really was my fault. Let's get to the rating. This drone is worth the money. With practice, this is relatively easy to control. I speak relatively because it takes some time, practice and skill to learn how to fly ANY drone. What sets this drone apart is the price. This drone has GPS and altimeter. This makes learning to fly much easier. BUT on my very first flight I hit a tree and broke two propellers. I suck okay? But now I'm much better. It just takes time and practice. Now I can fly this thing anywhere without destroying it. Why? GPS and Altimeter! Both controllers (GET A PROFESSIONAL CONTROLLER - IT'S WORTH IT. I HAVE WALLPAPERS) and the drone both have GPS. The controller will show you the exact GPS coordinates of the controller and the drone. I lost my drone shortly after receiving it and was able to locate it using the controller. I just kept walking as the controller coordinates got closer and closer to the drone. The drone and controller appear to have a maximum of 11 satellites to lock onto, just so you know. In terms of flight, it has incredible range. I've flown it 772 meters and its maximum altitude is 250 meters (check the law on that. It's probably a lot higher than safe!). All trees and trees with leaves or obstacles will affect the range. The battery life is also excellent. I didn't time it exactly, but probably at least 20 minutes. Compare this to most drone "toys" that fly for about 7 minutes. I bought a spare battery and I really recommend it. These batteries are HOT after flight and you must allow them to cool before recharging. Take a replacement. I use AA batteries in my controller. In any case, they seem to last for several weeks - I haven't timed them exactly, but you definitely don't change them all the time. I'd really like to get a lithium battery for the controller and if I ever do I'll try to post an update on that. The blades are brittle and they will break if you break them. I bought a set of spare parts and I needed them. If they don't break, they'll last a long time. You will love this drone. It feels like quality, especially if you've ever owned other drones. I had it for about 3 months and I really enjoyed playing with it.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Useless features

Economical replacement when my original drone was eaten alive.
