Everyone should wash their brushes before use as they are factory made germs and stuff...etc. Well I washed them with a mild shampoo and egg brushed like any other set and then after dried. I let them air dry for a few days and when I finally started using them the smell of the brushes was gone (mostly still in the storage cup) but the blue paint on the brushes started peeling off in places. I think normal wear and wash is a good idea for the color to come off, but for the price they really aren't made very well and since you have to wash them because of the smell, it's a shame that they break right before use. I would recommend buying a set without painted handles.
