The key fob did not work because the conductive pads under the rubber buttons were worn and would not close the circuit when the circuit board underneath was touched. The rest of the electronics worked. But lo and behold, someone is selling this particular case, so just pop a small circuit board into the new case and you have a working keychain! A new key fob programmed into your car costs $120 to $150 (which is absurd, but they get you). Great article.
