The Panasonic SDR-S26 SD camcorder is a gem. I bought this item for many reasons, but one of the appealing features for me was the effective anti-shock feature. This element greatly smoothes the video. The camcorder also has an optical zoom rated at 70x. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, but my goodness, this is the smartest camcorder on the market today, and that gives me bragging rights. The SDR-S26 has plenty of manual settings for different lighting conditions, subjects and compositions, but the intelligent Auto Mode feature does a great job of figuring out how to set things up hands-free. The camcorder is fully digital (no tape). and can store over 25 hours of video with an installed 32GB SD memory card. I use an 8 GB card and that's enough for me for now. Although there is editing software (VideoCam Suite 2.0) on the disc that came with it, I transfer my photos to my computer via an SD card. Card reader to use my Adobe Premier Elements editing program. There is no hard and heavy battery on the back of the Panasonic SDR-S26. The battery is small (like a mobile phone battery) and housed in an inner compartment. Claimed battery life offers over an hour of continuous recording. I doubt this is possible in normal and real-world situations, but the battery life is still pretty good. I would advise you to carry a spare battery if you are using the camcorder to document a large and extended event or if you are traveling away from an outlet. The device can record both videos and photos. This is the default for most camcorders. However, the photos it produces are not very good. The standard image size offers only 640 x 360 pixels and this resolution is weak. I didn't buy a camcorder to take photos, but sometimes it's nice to have that option. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of home videos. I've had several camcorders over the years and now I have stacks of family and travel videos that I can't show anyone even if the VCR is still working. Anyway, I originally decided to buy one of these little flip camcorders just in case I found myself in a situation where action shots were required. After extensive research, I found that these popular miniature camcorders had some serious limitations that the Panasonic SDR-S26 didn't, and it really wasn't that much bigger. I needed a small camera that I could easily carry around in case I found a suitable action scene to capture. I found both were small enough to fit in a bag: a shirt for one, a pair of pants or jacket for the other. The SDR-S26 costs almost twice as much as one of these handheld devices, but I found it was worth it. Money, although I probably won't use it every day. It was a choice between buying a fancy toy or buying a "full-featured" video camera. I took the adult version from Panasonic and I have no regrets.
