EDIT: Increased score. You'll only get USB 2.0 speeds on MacBook Pro with both the standard USB-C charging cable and the included USB-C to standard Type-A. In these cases it works as advertised with the NVMe drive but only works as a recovery. A 2018 MacBook Pro 15 ran a Samsung 960 Pro with a native read speed of 3500 MB/s and a write speed of 2100 MB/s. only with 40mb/sec. In theory, it should be at least 400MB/s for USB 3.0 Superspeed and 800MB/s for 3.1 Gen 2 speed. I've seen these slow speeds with both a straight USB-C to USB-C cable and a standard USB-C connector to the USB stick that came with the drive. I then used a certified Thunderbolt3 20Gb/s cable. This allowed the drive to run at PCI Gen3 x2 speeds. Now I was getting 730+ MB/s writing and 991+ MB/s reading.
