    Benefits of Aftermarket USB-C Cables

EDIT: Increased score. You'll only get USB 2.0 speeds on MacBook Pro with both the standard USB-C charging cable and the included USB-C to standard Type-A. In these cases it works as advertised with the NVMe drive but only works as a recovery. A 2018 MacBook Pro 15 ran a Samsung 960 Pro with a native read speed of 3500 MB/s and a write speed of 2100 MB/s. only with 40mb/sec. In theory, it should be at least 400MB/s for USB 3.0 Superspeed and 800MB/s for 3.1 Gen 2 speed. I've seen these slow…

A device with potential. But not quite there yet.

Pro: The internal chipset is a JMicron and registers itself as a USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) device under hardware control. Pros: Requires at least 0.3A to start and measure my device, with a maximum load of 0.78A. Cons: Not suitable for booting most operating systems due to limited cluster size and needs to be reformatted to 4K or 8K sectors ( this may be related to my NVME SAMSUNG 960 EVO 256GB device itself). Cons: Temperatures rise quickly for moderate file transfers, and large…

    It works, but beware

At the time of purchase, this is the only M.2 NVMe USB case I can find in Revain.-1: M.2 rattles a bit in the case, extra foam pads Help, but not enough -1: USB enclosure does not transmit M.2 manufacturer information (Samsung 960 EVO) over USB. Therefore, you cannot use Samsung Data Migration free software to transfer OS/data from old hard drive to new one.

    Losing connection endlessly

Build quality is not very good, especially the cable. And has the speed of a normal SSD. If you don't have an additional NVME SSD, this isn't for you. Update: The Type-C cable part is not solid. But I gave it another star because it works well as an outer shell. Another nvme m.2 case, it's getting warm. -Update: Constantly losing connection, very annoying. Changed cable and tried. still losing connection.

Won't read my already formatted drive

This enclosure appears to require drive formatting after installation and will not work with previously formatted drives. Unfortunately, I wanted to use it to read my old laptop SSD after installing a new one. The seller was helpful when I contacted him but it didn't seem to work for my needs. When I put my old PM961 in there, Linux saw the drive type correctly but thought it was unformatted while Windows misread the drive's capacity.

To update. Try LOTS of different cables before you give up.

Update November 24, 2018: I've used this before with many approved 10Gbps USB-C cables (including Google Pixel C and Choetech cables) and Cable Matters 6ft TB3 -Cables in Windows with TB3 and USB C Gen 2 and 2018 Mac Mini with TB3. I always got read and write speeds in the 40MB/s range. I hated this case, but I just used a Cable Matters USB-C cable (IF Certified 1M) and on my new Mac Mini it now tops out at over 800-900MB/s every time with a Mac Mini. Shit, so many cables don't seem to be…
