Okay but Tripp Lite needs some design and construction improvements

Bought a few months ago, it saved my TV (plugged into an unplugged outlet) and computer from a momentary power outage and some flickering . In that respect, I'm glad I bought it. I don't use this as a sub monitor device because I have a laptop. Rather, I use it to protect my home entertainment system where it fits snugly against my DVD player and VCR. Also, since I don't want my electronic devices to use "phantom power" I bought these so I can leave things I'm not using completely unplugged without having to reach for things or under a table. But since there are 2 LEDs that are always lit even when the main power is off, I was concerned that the surge protector was consuming phantom power. So I used a wattmeter and found that with no load it draws only 1/2 watt, which is significantly less than anything I've plugged into. I'm concerned about the design and build quality. The main switch gets stuck when I press it. The overall shape and feel of the switches is pretty odd. I don't understand why they can't be square or round. The switches also need to be a different color than the body to make them more visible, as do front and back labels, which are difficult if not impossible to read. The documentation on the location of the sockets and their purpose is very poor. The picture on the lid of the box contained the only useful information, so I snapped a photo of it for future reference. The power cord also needs to be detachable, like the Tripp Lite version of the UPS, so I can use the correct cord length. The cord on this device is too long for my use. I'd like to open up this unit to see how it works and see how I can change the cable, but I can't as the screws don't come off without special tools. I think if it ever breaks I'll get a free replacement. Hopefully Tripp Lite will have a new and improved version by then. Too bad the selection isn't that big. If more manufacturers made these things and advertised them as part of your home entertainment system instead of the big, fat monitors that few people and businesses have these days, there would probably be better products.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
