This tear mender vinyl mender worked like a charm. I have a relatively new waterproof patio cover that has worked very well. I was torn between replacing the cap (another $50 or so) or using some sort of repair kit. I read the reviews and took a chance. That vinyl Mender tape was the ticket. I paid about $12 for the kit and got to work. The first step was to wipe the repaired area with alcohol wipes (included in the kit). Then cut the tape to fit the area to be repaired, making sure the tape covers the tear PLUS at least 1 inch around all sides of the tear. Third, I had to remove the protective film from the tape. This was the hardest step so make sure you (or someone you know) have nails that can handle this part. Finally, the tape is placed over the gap, pressed and smoothed to remove the bubbles. And voila! The spot is repaired, barely visible thanks to that transparent repair tape (mold on the lid itself is more visible - phew). Bonus - I have enough tape left over for a future vinyl repair!
