Review on Compulab FIT STATUSB Fit StatUSB by Brent Walker

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reliable product at a good price, but no OS/application level software support yet

I ordered one because I've always thought it would be a good idea to use an RGB LED as a status beacon for small headless devices. This connects to my Headless Fitlet 2. I got it today and so far I've only had time to plug it into my Mac and surprisingly it showed up as a serial port. Based on the USB Vendor ID, the MCU is a TI MSP430 system. I didn't have the courage to see if I could get to the little plastic case off the board to look at the chip. The MCU provides a simplified serial command line interface. Type "H" for help. The implementation seems to automatically detect the serial speed - I was able to connect on 9600 and 115200. This is what the help looks like: ************************* ***** ************** ****************P - enter device firmware update mode? - Returns the UUID of the device ##RRGGBB - Sets the color of the LED according to the hexadecimal color code F - Sets the fade time in ms 'F1000'G - Returns the current color, (rr,gg,bb)B - Sets the colors of the fade B#RRGGBB -tttt #RRGGBB. Smooth transition after each color Firmware version: V0.9.5*************************************** ** ****** ********* **************** I removed some extra line breaks to compress the text. The MCU supports automatic transition from one color to another after a user-defined transition time. exists. There are no further details on the fit-iot website. Overall I like this product very much. It offers a decent price and a very low profile. Waiting for software support. Or maybe I'll try to add support for it to Python modules that support one of the other libraries. I will order a second device for my headless atom server. Highly recommended for developers and manufacturers. Not for people looking for a plug and play product.

Pros
  • <p>fit-statUSB is a programmable multicolor LED that plugs into the USB port. This is useful for showing errors, task progress, and abnormal conditions, especially on headless computers that don't have a monitor attached. fit-statUSB also helps to identify a specific computer among many similar ones.
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
