I ordered one because I've always thought it would be a good idea to use an RGB LED as a status beacon for small headless devices. This connects to my Headless Fitlet 2. I got it today and so far I've only had time to plug it into my Mac and surprisingly it showed up as a serial port. Based on the USB Vendor ID, the MCU is a TI MSP430 system. I didn't have the courage to see if I could get to the little plastic case off the board to look at the chip. The MCU provides a simplified serial command

Pros
  • <p>fit-statUSB is a programmable multicolor LED that plugs into the USB port. This is useful for showing errors, task progress, and abnormal conditions, especially on headless computers that don't have a monitor attached. fit-statUSB also helps to identify a specific computer among many similar ones.
Cons
  • Not bad, but...

Handy little gadget for Raspberry Pi Electronics

I put this together when I started my Raspberry Pi. It reads the boot log to determine which /dev/tty port was assigned to the device, stores this information in a small configuration file that other scripts can later refer to, and initializes the serial port. (Watch out for any line break/indentation issues this webpage might present.) ============================= = == = ===================#!/usr/bin/kshUSB_NUM=$(dmesg

If it works, it's useful

We use the device to find out when various scripts are running in the operating system. However, when we move the device to other computers, sometimes it never shows up again. the way the connectors are made in such a way that they get hit and miss when plugged in. Maybe we got a bad one?

Cons
  • Can do harm

Works great on PI 400. Doesn't work on Ubuntu.

This is a great indicator of system health. I use it to blink green or red with a simple command script. Nice and bright. It works fine on my Raspberry PI 400 and my Dell laptop running Windows 10. It shuts down after 24 hours on a Dell rack server running Ubuntu 16.04. I've tried several USB troubleshooting tricks, but it's still not reliable on Ubuntu.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • The list will be long.

Works great

I hate seeing the Outlook reminder dialog. I just completely ignore him and am often late for meetings. I wanted something harder to ignore, so I bought fit-statUSB. I plugged it in and it did exactly what I needed. I wrote a quick AHK script that looks for the Outlook reminder windows and when it finds it tells fit-statUSB to start flashing. Took me about 20 minutes to get it working. Recommended for simplicity and ease of use.

Works great with Raspberry Pi and with Ansible to change colors.

This is a great little device. Easier and almost as cheap as trying to build your own, ok maybe not that cheap but it's nice. I use them with Raspberry Pis in a cluster and use Ansible to switch colors based on various things like detecting which device Ansible is currently configuring and then whether they were successful or not. Helps keep the visual state of things for play and testing. I could also see that they are useful for various demos.
