Review on Officially Licensed Nintendo Switch HORI D-Pad Controller (L) - Zelda Edition by Richard Carroll

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Any platformers? Take it.

Okay let's get that out of the way, it's only for handheld devices, doesn't work wirelessly, and no, you're not going to modify it to work that way. That won't be a factor in this review since this thing is advertised as a handheld controller. Good? Good. In short, the joystick is identical to the standard Switch joystick, if there's a difference I can't feel it. Triggers feel good but different, shoulder clicks louder but feels good. There is no drone, no gyroscope. But that's ok since the switch and the other joycons have their own gyroscope and as said it won't work wirelessly. A quadcopter is way better for platforms, period. Maybe Tetris players will agree, but I don't play that, so it's good. Long: The Dpad is really good, it has a hard roll and some say it feels "soft". I would say that it seems smooth? Similar to the softer WiiU Pro Controller. I love the Dpad and am a bit picky, but to be honest I'm glad I have everything that takes me away from the awful "Dpad" joystick and away from the Dpad Switch Pro. I've tried several platformers, Sonic Mania, Freedom Planet, Donkey Kong, Flashback and I can say that I felt a lot better with them. What do you want? You need a dpad. I easily saved a lot of time on several Freedom Planet levels by matching them with my PC using the v2 XB1 controller. It was an immediate improvement, not overtime work. Given that Sonic Mania has a small puzzle game similar to Puyo Puyo, I can say that I've tried it several times and never failed, but I'm not a professional puzzle player. So take it how you want. My only complaint is unique. Joycon release button on the back? Pushed out, it sticks out on that raised box, not directly on the joycon. It doesn't affect gameplay in any way - but do I have a Revain Basics case? And it fits perfectly on the back of the Switch. Meaning? It doesn't fit in. I'd have to drill a hole for it if I were to use both together. Look, I can't put it more simply: - Do you play handheld platform games and the standard dpad stick annoys you? Got it. Worried the Joycon isn't good for everything else? Well I just told you it works as it should so you are safe. Got an Amazon Basics case? Okay then yes, but you may need to cut a hole out of that bar where the joystick eject button is.
