As J. Baker pointed out, the holder is well built but would be more useful if a mechanism was provided to secure it. We wired it to a tree in an area frequented by deer (in our front yard) and put in a standard sized salt container with no problem. However, wire wrapped multiple times around a two foot diameter tree is not entirely aesthetically pleasing. I suspect the deer won't mind.
