I bought 2 versions of the Xit - 52mm for my 40mm f/1.4 and 58mm for my 50mm f/2.8. The optics of these two nozzles are very similar, ie relatively poor. I've been a photographer for many years and I've gotten to the point where I'm tired of lugging around large and heavy lenses, especially when I'm on a hike. These days I mostly shoot with 50mm f/1.4 or 40mm f/2.8 lenses (aka "pancakes"). These fixed focal lengths are light, compact and offer incredibly good optics. However, their fixed medium telephoto focal lengths are also quite limited. Consider a crop factor of 1.6. Use this wide angle lens. It converts my 40mm to 17mm (40*0.43) or 28mm (40*0.43*1.6) when crop factor is taken into account. 17mm/28mm is very familiar territory as I have been shooting with 17-55mm f/2.8 for many years. The trade-off for a longer focal length is image quality. With the lens attached, the images from the 50mm f/1.4 lens - one of Canon's sharpest lenses - are degraded to the point of being softer than the images from my standard lens (18-55mm f/3, 5-1:5,6). No, make it much, much softer, especially around the edges and corners. The pictures are so bad I would say my phone gives clearer pictures. I am serious. But for what I paid (4.77) I really can't complain - I got what I paid for. And of course I wasn't expecting much from the start, but I hoped against all odds that the image quality would be at least halfway decent. But all is not lost. I've found that if I sharpen my images heavily and then resize them to 1920x1080 they actually come out pretty good, actually good enough for 300dpi 3x5 printing. Also, the 1920x1080 resolution is a good one Desktop wallpaper, and the relatively small file size required for this resolution also makes it ideal for text or email. All in all, this investment is not a total loss. This can be useful when using medium telephoto prime lenses. However, be aware that this will make your images look very soft. Not recommended for pixel lovers. Recommended with reservations to the rest of us.
