I've been using various combinations of Microsoft keyboards and mice for quite some time and I keep encountering a similar problem. The range between receiver and keyboard or mouse is limited to a few centimetres. I bought a keyboard and mouse with a Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Desktop USB connector hoping it would be different, but unfortunately they remain the same - the range is only a few inches and then the mouse starts to jump and die Keyboard stops responding. I've tried other brands with no problems, so the problem is with Microsoft products. Even without interference and line of sight, the problems remain. These issues do not occur when I use only a mouse or Microsoft standalone wireless mice. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse combos.
