It's wrong to call it a sponge, sponges hold and absorb water. This is a soft silicone scrub. We use a soap paste that absorbs the soap from the container and the scrub is soft enough not to scratch the soap and hold it between the pad's fingers. If you are looking for something more durable than a sponge but not as hard as a green pad then this should be it. Another plus: it's easier to clean than a sponge, so we think it's more hygienic. In this survey I was asked about "taste". I gave one star because the product has NO smell. Didn't really know how to rate this but we don't want to smell with them.
