I'm an engineer who doesn't like the lighting situation at home at all. There are no standards in stores and a lot of distortions and contradictions. I have a Minolta flash meter that accurately measures the color temperature of light. I've tried incandescent technology at Walmart, Sam's Club Home Depot, and Lowes. The most prominent examples are: 1) yellow light is referred to as soft white (2700) 2) very blue washed out colored light is referred to as daylight (6000-6500) 3) low lumens (400-600 lumens) $90! 4) Some bulbs are advertised as white but the diagram on the back says they are yellow. Think! Here are the bulbs to avoid: all (dramatically washed out blue) daylight and (yellow) soft whites. The GE Reveal offers slightly better clarity but is overpriced and quite yellow. Full spectrum bulbs (5000-5500) are a step up, but stores have a very limited selection. The entire Home Depot 100W range outperforms the Ott-Lite Lowe. The Sam's Club front LED panel features a 520 lumen, 4100K, 9 PAR38 LED reflector that has an easily perceptible, smoother light spectrum. Great for a light in the kitchen in the evening. The $70 LED lights at the hardware store are hardly a bargain since Sam has them for $20! However, their color fastness index (CRI) is only 74. The best of all lamps are these 5500K Alzo. I installed 45 watts in my kitchen pantry and the color of the food boxes is very popular. Food looks like in magazines. Clarity is top-notch (although 27 watts should be enough). You are the standard against which others should be compared. My wife hasn't complained even with them on at night. This is the first. Skin tones in the bathroom look very natural. First time again. The color temperature alone is not the only reason for buying a lamp, a high color rendering index is also required. Alzo has 92 points, which is a lot. Most manufacturers don't even provide this measurable number (allegedly because it's too low). I tested other lamps. For the vanity and lamps (Alzo makes them) they provide a VERY even sphere of beautiful 5000K white light. I have ordered 12 for the bathrooms of my new home: Maxlite 14 Watt G30 Globe CFL DL SKM14EGDL For the kitchen these are the best PAR 5000K bulbs right now. The color quality isn't as good as Alzo, but they don't make reflector lamps! Maxlite 23W CFL R40 Flood Day Lite SKR423FLDL In summary, the best home lighting is Photo CFL, which offers a range of 5000-5500K with a color rendering index of over 90. In addition, these bulbs make rooms brighter than hardware store lamps. That said, a more comfortable light makes for a higher brightness, so use 45-watt light bulbs in large pantries or rooms.
