On the outside it is not a pretty quilt like material as shown in the photos but a cheap glossy vinyl material that looks like a vinyl table top you could use for a child's birthday party. The 12 cup compartments will never fit actual full-sized mugs with handles, but will fit short handleless glasses or Chinese teacups. I managed to squeeze in 8 regular sized mugs with handles by cutting through the cardboard dividers and they are VERY snug. Other than that, it's not a terrible storage box. It's useful but not worth the double digit price given the cheap vinyl and small size. If it were about 2 inches wider and 2 inches longer it would make a world of difference and be a lot more useful.
