Review on Sony 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 FE OSS Standard πŸ“· Zoom Lens - High-Quality Interchangeable Lens for Exceptional Photography by Hideo Masuda ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

As such, there are no disadvantages, it is convenient to use.

Convenient for shooting video. With a little stretch (taking into account the indicated shortcomings), you can use it for wedding photography. If there is nothing else at hand, you can even take a portrait, landscape, whatever . I took it for myself (on the A7M3) just for video and for photos as an inexpensive universal staffer for random scenes (on vacation) and as a replacement for fixes (35-28mm) for episodic shooting, if a 55mm fix cannot be used (indoors) or "the soul demands" a wider angle. For portrait/objectives I mostly use 85mm/1.8, less often 55/1.8, but for nature and architecture 55mm can be cramped.

Pros
  • Price-quality ratio. For a practically free "whale" lens, it is far from useless, and at the same time it is a full-fledged zoom with autofocus and stabilizer. Is it possible to ask for something more for its price? Given the price, you can safely put 5 stars, but I still put 4, so as not to get the feeling that the lens is without flaws. Pretty sharp. For a zoom, it’s not bad at all, for its cost - I would even say - surprisingly sharp. It feels like it allows at least 12-15MP (less at the edges at the short end and the open aperture). Quite normal bokeh, and in general the picture is not "plastic" at all. Not as plastic as good fixes, but again, remember that this is a zoom, and its price is several times less than the most inexpensive of the full-frame autofocus fixes for the Sony E mount. Subjectively, I would compare the image that can be obtained on the A7M3 with this lens at 1/8 aperture at ISO100 with the one obtained at ISO300-400 with a good fix (for example, Zeiss 55 / 1.8). Quite contrasting even in backlight (does not lather) and hares are acceptable. Compact and lightweight. When zooming, the trunk extends slightly, the front lens does not rotate, the focus does not walk. The stabilizer is fine.
Cons
  • The disadvantages are also a continuation of its cost and the corresponding simplicity of design. The lens, of course, does not live up to the "professional" requirements. Not to say that it is strong, but still, for a demanding look, defects will be visible. This is a consequence of vignetting, distortion and aberrations, which are clearly visible in RAW. All this is easily corrected by the lens profile, but of course there are consequences. In terms of sharpness, more modern lenses also stepped forward. But then again, everything can be forgiven for its price. It happens that no less defects are characteristic of other much more expensive zooms.
