Good enough for white balancing, not suitable for color calibration

If you want a cheap card for the white balance, then this might work for you, but I figured it would be a cheaper alternative for color calibration than the real ColorChecker. However, this is not the case. The product description states that it comes with "free downloadable software" to create a DNG camera profile. If you poke around on their website you will find a zip file you can download that contains a Java script (not a plugin) that can be used to calibrate. However, it only works with the full version of Photoshop and not with Lightroom or Photoshop Elements. The script is very tricky and won't work if everything isn't perfect. Even when the image was properly exposed, the script gave errors about half the time I tried to run it, and the description of the error and the manual that came with it barely explained how to fix it. Even when running, it only adjusts the RGB Hue/Saturation sliders in Photoshop's Camera Calibration tab, and while you can save the settings in .xmp format, it's not a "DNG Camera Profile" as advertised, at least not in the way I understand it. Once run, it creates an overlay on your image to show you how the colors should look, but the "calibrated" image doesn't look more accurate than the target colors. than before calibration. The quality of the card itself could be better. The gray color on the back is applied directly to the card, but the ink is not very durable and is already being erased in places. On the front, the colored boxes are small pieces of paper pasted over a black card. Some of the color boxes were glued a bit crooked, which isn't a big deal but shows the level of quality control they put into this thing. The front of the card was covered in paper dust inside the package and the dark gray rectangle on one of my two cards was scratched off upon arrival. Also, the black background of the card that the colored squares are glued to is VERY reflective. It works well for white balance, but if that was all I wanted, I'd go with something else. colored boxes are small pieces of paper pasted over a black card.
