Due to what is probably my baby's entropy process and the "fingers" he finds and moves around the house, I woke up one day and couldn't do my JBL LIVE find 300 headphones. Maybe one day they come out and I can do a direct comparison, but to be honest I've never liked how they fit, the touch controls or all that "true wireless" stuff. Finally, my worst nightmare about her came true. So about Sony. I wanted to go back to the active noise canceling neckband set and they were recommended to me by a lot of people. Buy once, cry once, right? I'm a little disappointed after the first listen. Only the sound is a bit dull. Whistles are creaky and "squishy". There is no bass. Did I make a $200 mistake? I keep listening and playing with the equalizer. The highs get a little cleaner and tighter, but the bass is overdone on some songs. What's going on here? I'll listen for a few more hours and it'll get better. At the end I set the equalizer to a flat level. I look at some of the reference tracks that I know well and I find that they are really good! Maybe TOO good. Why am I saying this? The differences in the sound quality of the recordings become clearer. Donald Fagen's vocals and Bernard Purdy's hi-hats cut through the warm flanks of the Rhodes on Babylon sisters. My eyes widen every time he sings the opening line. Sounds amazing. I can hear all of Keith Jarrett's keystrokes and the original grunt more clearly. The chatter at the beginning of 1975's If I Believe You morphs from background noise into conversation. The SOLAR process really shows the clarity and balance of The Whispers Love Is Where You Find It album. But all the tracks on Roy Ayers' Virgin Ubiquity II sound like they've gone through a low-pass filter. And the bass in Awakening by Ahmad Jamal is even more commanding. So these headphones seem to exaggerate the quality of the mix compared to other headphones I've used. Overall I'm very optimistic about them and would recommend them without hesitation, at least for the kind of music I tend to listen to. I'm still playing with the fit - they go deep which is good for sound quality but maybe not for long term comfortable listening. The neckband itself is not too heavy and I don't notice it. The simple control buttons are great and more than what I'm used to. Start + connection was very easy. Etc. etc. No complaints after approx. 48 hours. The real test will be how they hold up - I switched to JBL because all my collars seem to lose the channel after about 2 years. I definitely wish I could get more out of them. But the more I listen, the more I like them, you can't really dream of more.
