I use this fiberglass mat as a base for filling large holes where it is completely covered by the first layer of filler. This way, any loose strands that may be sticking out are not a problem as they still get a second coat or even a few extra coats of putty. It can sometimes be a bit trickier and more difficult to work with than the denser fiberglass mesh due to the looser thread, but I find the mat integrates better with the fill for a more permanent repair when filling large holes and voids. Also, it's usually cheaper than cloth, which helps keep costs down if you're repairing multiple large holes.
