Big is too big, medium is too small

For my son for jiu-jitsu. Bought them in gray a few months ago and they fit tight. My son weighs almost 8.70 pounds and is about 4ft tall and is currently carrying an 8-10. Got the red one in a plus size and it's too big. There seems to be nothing between them. I am keeping it as he will grow in it over time.
