Cute but with a strong smell

Bought for our hamster but with a strong chemical smell. It was easy to put together and seemed sturdy, but our hamster didn't like it. He was fine with playing with it, but refused to keep it in his cage. He was showing many signs of stress in his normal cage and wasn't sure if it was the shape, the texture or the lingering smell. Sometimes we let him play with him outside the cage, but that's about it.
