I shave regularly, even in times of COVID. Pre-shaving is essential for a close and precise shave, especially when using a regular straight razor. I have tried many brands and I have to say that the aftershave cream is very good for everyday use. (Note: I don't use their shaving cream, I use a different brand) There are very few other brands that can work as well or even better. but not in this price range. A hot towel and preshave worked wonders for a few minutes and made my shave smoother and easier. I was in a rush once and didn't pre-warm with a wet towel and I found it wasn't that effective. The hot towel is needed in my opinion to help your skin absorb the pre-shave I feel it needs. Any guy reading this will be wondering what hair he has in his beard. All I can suggest is try it with a hot towel one time and next time without shaving, you can tell right away if it works for your skin type and beard hair. I have quite a thick beard so this works great for me.
