You work for a while.

I purchased this key fob kit to replace a broken key fob on my 2014 Malibu. For those unfamiliar, the GM flip blade keys used on several different vehicles this year are notorious for being weak and breaking. Replacing a key at the dealership can cost hundreds, and since these keys don't require special service tools to program, they seem very worthwhile. I replaced the bare blade in this keychain with the original blade from my broken key. This can easily be done with a punch and a small hammer to knock out the roll pin holding the key blade. After that, programming was easily possible by starting the car with the original key, then switching it off and inserting the new key blade. This will program the immobilizer and key fob buttons at the same time. I had no trouble with this process and this aftermarket key worked great. Until it worked about 6 months later. When I tried to leave work, my car wouldn't start. It wouldn't even start and the message "IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM SERVICE" appeared. I immediately suspected that this secondary key must have failed. I work at an auto service training center so I used our diagnostic scanner to go through a list of data while trying to start the car. The ECU couldn't even find the key. Luckily my original spare key was brought to me by a friend. With the original spare key for my car, it started and worked perfectly. The retrofit key has failed. Based on the specs of these aftermarket keys, I really can't recommend them. They worked well for a short time but for some reason they don't last long. I must add that the key has not been dropped or abused and looks perfectly normal from the outside with no wear/play/etc. I'm assuming that the internal transponder chip just isn't up to the day-to-day tasks. I guess I'll have to put up with it and spend a lot of money on the original key from the dealer.

Pros
  • Heavy duty construction
Cons
  • Non automatic
