Review on πŸ“Ό Portable Retro Walkman Tape Player | Cassette to MP3 Converter via USB | Auto Reverse | Portable Audio Music Player by Mark Gilbert

The exit is a bit noisy.

I bought this to digitize my old audio book cassettes. I didn't want to bother installing a driver and downloading weird software onto my computer, so I first tried recording using the Audacity recording software with a headphone jack plugged into my computer's line-in. The volume control is a little touchy, but it works. After getting the level right, I noticed that there was quite a noticeable hum/hiss in the recording. I know it's coming from that cassette deck and not a tape or cable because when I connect the same cable to my old Pioneer stereo and play the same cassette there is no hiss. Noise, I decided to try the USB interface for recording but still didn't want to mess around with the driver and software so I connected it to my computer running a Linux OS (Ubuntu 20) in which Hoping it would recognize it and did. Upon opening Audacity, I found a new audio input called [edit later to give it the correct name, something like recording input 1] and noticed that the noise was reduced by about two-thirds when using the device's USB interface. I was hoping to use this cassette deck with its headphone jack connected to my portable digital recorder to transfer cassettes on the go, but due to the amount of noise the unit produces I cannot use it for that purpose. Considering it didn't cost a lot of money and the noise level via USB isn't that bad, I won't bother sending it back. I just leave it on my desk and use it to transfer tapes at home.

Pros
  • USB CASSETTE GRIPPER
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
