I tried to make pot holders with two layers of fabric and two layers of terry cloth. (Note: if you want to make oven mitts, a few squares of terry cloth cut from a cheap beach towel will insulate better and be cheaper than any fancy quilted batting you can find.) However, sewing so many thick layers was frustrating. My sewing machine kept jamming and the thread would tangle and then break. I was about to give up in frustration, thinking my sewing machine wasn't strong enough to sew something that heavy. But then I came across these needles and decided it was worth a try. This is where they worked. Apparently, my problem wasn't with my typewriter, but with small needles. These heavy needles easily pierced thick potholders and some even thicker potholders. Keep in mind that these needles are a bit more difficult to insert into the sewing machine than smaller needles. You may have to loosen and squeeze the needle clamp more than usual to insert the needle. Then do a few test stitches. If the thread becomes tangled or the stitches look loose and sloppy, stop, unscrew the needle clamp completely, and push the needle up firmly to tighten the clamp. And don't forget to switch back to a lighter needle when you're done with a heavy fabric, as these needles make messy stitches on light fabrics.
