1/2 inch thick. A broken one showed tons of wasted space on the internal circuit board, so they could be smaller, probably an inch no problem. Maybe the large size is good for people with disabling arthritis? But I think it's more of a cheap production. They're made in China and come in 10 or more different names (in fact there's no name on the box or device) so buy what's cheaper and they'll work with any base that uses buttons that look the same . You pair a button to a base, but the pairing is initiated by the base, so in theory you could pair a button to multiple base stations to get a larger coverage area. The instructions are poorly written and don't even match the button they were sent from. But they work, and that's the main thing.
