No smell or bad taste when new. I simply followed the instructions to wash thoroughly (mild dish soap) and then heat water, empty and repeat three times before first use. This unit collapses for storage quicker and easier than my last version. I like the switch for different temps, (keep warm, tea, coffee, boil). I like that if left on, it heats up periodically and briefly to maintain temperature. I also like that it goes off automatically if for some reason it boils dry. Any heating item should be supervised and kept out of reach of children. The cord is not very long, but long enough to use safely and less bulk and weight for traveling. I’m glad I got the white…it looks nice and modern! Very happy with my purchase.
