The benefits of these splash guards are pretty straight forward, but I had a hard time deciding which to buy. My fiancee has a Guyot Designs one with an opening for drinking and a vent on the opposite side, and that is how I discovered the utility of these things. I was also interested in this Nalgene option, which was less expensive at the time of my purchase. I keep a 32 oz, quart-size Nalgene bottle at home and one at work, so I decided I'd just get both and see which I liked better.I see these suckers as having two pretty basic functions: (1) make sure I don't spill when on a rocking boat or in a moving car and (2) don't fall into the bottle. It's fine to drink out of -- sometimes I guess I manage to block the top of the opening, which is intended to act as a vent, and get a weird slurping sound. I prefer the option with the separate vent. This "sipper" is a hard plastic which doesn't fall into the bottle easily. It's never fallen in accidentally. It will fall in after a few pretty solid taps on its surface, and is easy enough to retrieve (when the bottle is empty). The Guyot Designs "splash guard" I purchased is made of a softer, rubbery plastic. The separate vent is much preferred, but it falls into the bottle much more easily. It can't even withstand one solid tap on the surface. It's also plenty easy to retrieve after it has fallen in.My fiancee's Guyot Designs splash guard is made of a hard plastic, similar to this Nalgene option, but also has the separate vent that I prefer. That is the best of both worlds in my opinion, but I'm not sure how you find that specific product. Good luck!
