Replacement Wheel Horse 520-H Tach

Installed to replace a broken wheelbarrow with a Wheel Horse 520-H tractor with an Onan P-220 engine. The factory gauges are mounted on a metal instrument panel and covered by a plastic instrument panel. The bezel of this device was too thick to fit between the two panels. I used a 2" drop wheel to enlarge the hole in the plastic panel by about 1/16" and installed the new tachometer over the plastic gauge panel. I connected the block according to the connection diagram in the manual. I connected the signal wire to the negative pole of Onan's ignition coil. I set the gear ratio to number three and adjusted the potentiometer to match the laser tachometer on the crankshaft output. The corrections are difficult to see. I found it very helpful to be able to remove both the rubber stoppers and the light with a pen through one of the holes while adjusting the other - you will need a jeweler's screwdriver with a 1/16 inch wide blade. Also, I found that the tachometer needs to be adjusted prior to installation. it was much easier in the dash. After calibrating, I disconnected the tachometer, installed it in the dash, and reconnected the wiring. The gauge needle "twitches" a little. I expected the sensor to work better on an engine with more cylinders. This was the only tach I could find - Toro had adjusted the factory tach. I would say the performance is pretty good for this application. It's better than trying to judge RPM by ear.
