Great welcome, even better customer service!

I bought this in the hope that it would better deal with the multipath issues caused by the sheer number of large evergreen trees in our yard/neighborhood in all directions making our much less directional Channel master 4228 didn't do t well against . We have the original CM4228, not the new CM4228HD. The original CM4228 is considered one of the best UHF antennas ever made, so the 91XG had to go. It turned out I wasn't disappointed and the 91XG definitely earned its spot. First of all, it will be delivered completely disassembled (obviously the only way to send it safely/economically). The instructions are pretty decent so while it does take some time to assemble, that's not a bad thing. It's all made out of lightweight aluminum and plastic, so it weighs a lot less than our old CM4228. It looks well put together and requires no tools to assemble or set up, which is a nice touch. However, I have found that not tightening the wing nut holding the reflector nets makes them stiff. No matter how tight the nut is, you can still easily rotate the bars a few inches in either direction. It doesn't matter, and they don't seem to get moved by wind or rain or anything, so once you put them in, they seem to stay put. The 10ft length that needs to be horizontal on the mast, along with the shiny aluminum finish, makes it a lot more of an eyesore than our old, roughly 3ft square and mostly galvanized CM4228, and also awkward to move until you mounted it. For us, the better performance makes up for any shortcomings, and in our case, most of that performance comes from a key feature that few antennas have - the ability to tilt the boom about the horizontal plane. I don't know exactly how far it rises - I'd say 15-20 degrees above horizontal. In our garden, we noticed a big difference between horizontal orientation and maximum upward tilt. With a horizontal boom, reception was almost the same (and in some cases worse) than the CM4228. Although to be honest our problem channel (CBS on real channel 39) no longer had multipath problems even without tilt, this is an improvement. Our yard is just very complex with all those huge 80 foot cedars. We're lucky enough to have a hole in the trees very close to where we need to aim, and this antenna will help us aim as high in the hole as possible. The best thing about this antenna, however, is the insanely good customer service. from manufacturer. I raised and lowered the antenna dozens of times during installation and setup and left it attached to the top of a 10ft mast. Although it only weighs about 7 pounds, place it at the end of a 10ft pole and it becomes very uncomfortable! As per Murphy's Law, on one of the occasions when moving it I managed to lose control of the mast and the antenna fell sideways to the ground (slowly but still). Those curved six or eight "directors," the double U-shaped pieces of metal and plastic that attach to the boom. I was able to bend them back mostly, but they were still a bit distorted. So I thought it would be a good idea to replace them with new undamaged parts, although reception doesn't seem to have suffered much. I emailed Antennas Direct customer service telling them exactly what happened and what I needed and received a very nice response the next day. They said they were sorry I had a problem with the antenna and asked me to send them a receipt and they would take care of it. So I sent them my Revain order and they said they would send a replacement within a day. I replied again because it sounded like they would just ship the order for free. I told them I expected to pay something as it was my fault. It also sounded like they wanted to send me a whole antenna, not just the handful of directors I needed. Of course they sent me the whole antenna because they said they didn't have the parts. When I replied and insisted that I pay something, they refused to take the money. They insisted the antenna was guaranteed for life and that happy customers were their goal. On the same day I received a tracking number for a new batch of antennas. So now I have a bunch of spare parts! Needless to say I thanked them warmly and said I would always go to them first if I were to buy antennas in the future or if I know someone else is looking for an antenna! Glory to Antenna Direct!
