Super cheap fire magazine display!

I was looking for the cheapest way to make a convincingly realistic fireplace display case with only LED lighting and no heating. They work really really well and I'm very surprised. Now you can spend anywhere from $2 to $300 on electric firewood that you plug into an outlet, and some of them have heaters. In fact, my parents just inserted a $4,500 natural gas ledger. Well, it's bloody expensive. But I decided I really didn't need heat. And I discovered these lightbulbs and some videos online that make them possible. So we just used the logs I used to start my last campfire and they didn't burn too much so they're totally realistic. And as you can see, I had a pretty good grille and a nice glass and wire body. I installed 2 outlets on a 2 x 4 and routed the wire from the left side of my fireplace where there was a small gap. It took some time to arrange the logs exactly so that you can see the plastic lightbulbs but not their tops because that will give them away. But just seeing the side plastic through the logs is pretty strong evidence of a small fire. Honestly, I think it's about as good as some of those $300 firewood sets with electric lights behind them. And the nice thing is that I can always pull out the lightbulbs and start a real fire if I really want to. There is one property of these lightbulbs: if you turn them on and then turn them on again, they change mode to your liking. a solid orange light or a flashing orange light and then an orange flame again. So it's not great if you turn them off and then decide you want to turn them back on, you have to turn them on three times. But if you wait a minute or two, they will revert to what they were before. If you know what I mean. I've had them for 2 hours at most so I don't really know how long they will last but I've measured them and they burn 2 watts each which is great.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A shady purchase for the elderly
