I replaced ten GE J458 60W PAR 16 halogen bulbs housed in external waterproof fixtures with Torchstar 7.5W dimmable LED PAR 16 bulbs. The fixtures were large enough to accommodate the halogen bulbs. After reading several reviewers experiencing crashes, flickering on dimming, and size incompatibility issues, I thoroughly tested these bulbs before climbing the stairs to replace the halogen bulbs. If you shine on the garage door at night with halogen and LED lamps at the same time, the overall intensity will be about the same. The color temperature of the LED was slightly lower than expected (LED is 3000K and halogen is 2700K). While both lamps produced an equally sized spot, the LED had a much more even intensity across the illuminated area. the rest of the area is slightly dimmer than the LED. The LED was 2 7/8 inches long (1/8 inch longer than the halogen bulb) and both were exactly 2 inches in diameter. The actually measured power consumption of the halogen lamp was 58.5 watts and the LED 6.3 watts, both measured at 120.8 volts. Using the Insteon lamp dimmer module I have dimmed all lamps to 10% of full brightness and have not noticed any flickering in any of the lamps. I dim 6 of the 10 outdoor lights to balance the light with the light coming from the ground lights. I have found that I need to dim LED bulbs much more than halogen bulbs to get the same balance. I only installed them a few weeks ago so can't comment on durability but so far I'm very happy with their performance.
