After much searching on the internet I have come to the conclusion that the HD in my daughter's 2 year old MacBook Pro needs to be replaced. It didn't turn on - just a white screen with a spinning color wheel. I got a new HD and after making sure it was the right part I went looking for instructions on how to re-download Lion to the new HD. I forgot exactly what steps to take - I did this about a month ago - but I had to use an 8GB flash drive to create a boot disk (flash drive) by partitioning it first , held down the Mac Option key and go through multiple stages! I'm not very good with computers, but somehow I managed - it took several hours. I installed a new HD, held down the "Option" key and turned on the laptop. Partitioned a new HD, connected to the internet and reinstalled Lion. After about 2 hours, the MacBook Pro came back to life. I am very happy with this purchase and it has saved me hundreds of dollars compared to taking it to an Apple Store to have it repaired. This was the first time I replaced the HD.
