call it what you want The ONLY thing that matters is that it WORKS.

Worked great for a little less than 2 years. Now it's DOA. In the past few months I've seen faucets build up limescale, I have to flush the CLR down the toilet to flush it out. For the money I spent on this thing I was expecting longer life and better response - check this out, manufacturer's answer. Nothing has changed in the installation, the meter is still pulsing and the uninterrupted wiring is nice and tight. After reading all the negativity about it in the press I wasn't sure. However, I did a lot of research myself and found it to be a proven technology in industrial and commercial settings and read the reviews on the LA County website. Groundwater kills crops and a few other things. Read More The thing is, this is NOT voodoo science as all the negative reviews would have you believe. I can only assume these reviews are provided courtesy of the Saltwater Softeners. This has been happening to me since I installed it myself following the instructions a little over 3 months ago. I stopped using CLR to flush my toilet. I had to pour the CLR through the plastic spout in the reservoir twice a month on average to keep the toilet flushing. Even then it wasn't that great. A few weeks after installing Scalewatcher, I noticed that I didn't need to install the CLR and it still resets fine. To date I have never put anything in my toilet and it makes a banging sound when it flushes. One rinse per use and I've been able to reduce the amount of water I use to rinse. The water pressure rose throughout the house. In the past, when the kitchen sink was on, the bathroom faucet had minimal water pressure, like a trickle. Now I can flush the toilet, turn on the bathroom and kitchen faucets with a slight drop in pressure. My washing machine works much better and my clothes aren't stiff. In addition, the feeling of roughness in the tub has disappeared. I mean, when you ran your fingers over the washing machine tub, the touch felt slightly rough. Now it's smooth and you can make it squeak. My dishwasher has never worked better. Is always. My dishes are clean, not cloudy. My dog's ceramic drinker is losing scale inside. Not as fast as a washing machine, but I don't wash often. The rest of the dishes creaks after washing and there is no buildup on the cutlery like there used to be. My coffee maker hasn't gotten me to run a descaling cycle in 2 months. 2 months. I had to run the vinegar cycle every few weeks. Now the carafe stays clean. I just rinse it out and hang it on a hanger to dry. Did. My ice cubes don't taste weird and when I put them in the coffee they don't leave sticky rings in the cup (it's black) like they used to. I mentioned ice cubes, but I should also mention that the filtered water from the refrigerator has not left any deposits in the pan or sink for a long time and the pressure there has increased significantly. Faucet screens and shower head haven't had to be cleaned in a few months; The taps were cleaned fairly regularly and the shower head weekly. The water pressure is excellent here too. I'm just a blight fed up with the constant maintenance and upkeep and still have very hard water. I pulled out my Mr. Softy and took a chance. I'm very glad I did. Don't take my word for it. The information is available, some of these reviews have links that you can view. Los Angeles County has a website dedicated to alternative water treatment solutions. It is NOT a fabric softener, it is a descaler. Whatever you call it, all that matters is that it WORKS. After 3 months I will never go back to the salty or slimy feeling of water in the shower.
