Review on πŸ’‘ Efficient Energy Saving: Belkin 8-Outlet Conserve Switch Surge Protector with Remote Control, 4ft Cord – White by Brandon Skeet

Loved it, and then it melted.

(updated) A year and a half later it was discovered that heat damage had occurred. The plug almost melted into the thing. I use it a few times a day to heat water (680 watts for about 10 minutes). The result is a melted rosette. (See photo). I verified that the heat was actually being caused by the resistance in the unit and not a plug in the water tank. [Edit to credit James H. and S. Damon with correct comments.] (Original review) It works and I use it as a hot water kettle for tea which I used to forget to turn off. It feels good and has been running for a year now with no problems. This device would be perfect if: 1. it had a brighter indicator light (very difficult to see in any ambient light) and 2. it could be turned off by pressing the button again. This last point is confusing. It's billed as a power saver, but you can't turn the damn thing off without waiting for the timer to expire or unplugging it. **sigh** Like it was conceptualized and physically designed to perfection and then handed over to an engineer at the last minute who spent 30 seconds thinking about how it was supposed to work before plugging it in and putting an end to it.

Pros
  • Extension cord and surge protector
Cons
  • Some bugs
