Beautiful lens monster

Looks monstrous, but don't let that scare you. If like me you can't decide between that old mid-range zoom and the newer 24-70 f/2.8 then let me tell you about it. I've heard complaints that it's too heavy. It's only slightly heavier than 24-70. And I mean very little. If you can't handle a few more ounces, 24-70 is too heavy for you. Don't be a little girl because of the weight. It's shorter than 24-70 but thicker (is that a word?). I think it looks really cool. I also like that it has an aperture ring so it's great if you're shooting video. I personally don't care about the 4mm difference. If you want something wider, you should get a true wide-angle lens. It's good enough for general use and is my lens when I know I need a "normal" range for event photography. The 24-70 has a Nano Crystal coating (reduces glare) so get it if you plan on shooting directly into the sun or with a flash. I don't have any glare problems. Also, as far as I know, it's not weatherproof. I made it to the mammoth in light snow and the lens was pretty wet. I got in the car and tried to make sure the temperature didn't change too abruptly or too quickly because I didn't want to damage the lens, but the glass started fogging up or condensing. It was pretty creepy, but I let the condensation evaporate on its own and luckily it was only on the outside of the jar. I didn't notice any damage and it runs absolutely silent (knock on wood). I do not recommend photographing it in wet/bitter cold weather without protection. I'll end this review by saying it was worth it. Especially for the price I paid. Very happy with it.
