Long argued about this microphone. I liked the idea of using it in analog mode, plugging it directly into my field recorder, camera or phone, and being able to connect it digitally via USB directly to my computer. However, my main use is my field recorder and I would prefer an XLR connector rather than a 3.5mm TRS/TRRS connector. I happen to have a Rode VXLR+ that converts XLR to 3.5mm and converts phantom power to "plug-in power" so I decided to give the mic a try. It didn't work at first and I almost got the mic back. The microphone is intelligent and can be switched between TRS (camera) and TRRS (phone - headphone/microphone combo) connection with the supplied TRRS/TRRS cable. On the other hand, VXLR+. not so smart. It was designed to connect trs, not trrs. Connecting it via trrs didn't work. But before packing and sending the mic back, I decided to go with a trs/trs cable. and voila! The mic sounds amazing! Really good gain, very low noise. While it definitely has a proximity effect, it maintains warmth/depth at around 18 inches of drone. So I did some quick test recordings and then A/B tested the raw audio on some of the more professional sounding YouTube channels. To be honest, my sound sounded better! ;) Using it in a podcast/voiceover at 3-6 inches right on my computer sounded just as amazing. My phone even recognizes the microphone over USB! - Chamber microphone. Fur. But traditional NTG mics, or even the almighty MKH-416, sound "mehβ when used as a camera mic. It's just not what you do if you want good sound quality! IMHO. Buy it!
