I really like these Battery Tender Plus models. I'm guessing they're almost foolproof (reverse polarity protection, won't drain battery during a power outage, don't spark when Live Clips are connected to battery, auto shut off if battery is shorted or under 3V.). My guess is that California required them to offer this particular "High Performance" model for California sale, so a higher price than the original Battery Tender Plus, which you can still buy if you have an address outside of California. I have two now, one for van batteries and one for one of our smaller cars and so far I've had no problems with either. use alligator clips and they were not included in the older model. I also bought a 25ft extension so the charger would be in the garage next to the garage door and the extension was long enough to go under the garage door through a small hole under the back corner of the hood and into the battery ( even if the car is secured against the garage).
