Ok they don't really look alike and I definitely underestimated them in front of kids but they are amazing they are so versatile. They work with different age groups, they have children's teeth on them, they are durable and can take a beating! I use them to attach toys and other things to a stroller, car seat or whatever, just making sure it's a safe length. Also, I throw it in the dishwasher to clean it and haven't had any issues. (top shelf) I can't remember if the packaging recommends this or not though, but I saw on Pinterest that you can and thought I'd give it a try, it works great! However, do this at your own discretion, I am by no means an expert.
