Review on πŸ“» Highly Portable and Sleek Sony ICF38 AM/FM Radio in Black - Perfect for On-the-Go Listening by Elizabeth Rue

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Small to medium sized dual band radio, simple, works well, very well designed.

I had the popular Sony ICF-S10MK2 small pocket radio for many years and it has served me well. However, sometimes you just want something bigger and heavier that works at least as well. Sony's ICF38 is almost as popular, and while it doesn't look pretty or stylish, it has everything you need: AM/FM with red tuning light for both bands, a foldable antenna, which I rarely need around town; Handle that slides out on the back. It's the epitome of "form follows function": I was able to charge four AA batteries (sold separately), change bands, tune in, and find my favorite stations without the help of written instructions, just general knowledge. It's surprisingly heavy for its size, and some might find this a downside. I like it though, especially because it includes a twisted pair power cord next to the battery compartment so is reasonably well balanced. (Sony recommends removing all batteries if you plan to run the radio on AC power for long periods of time.) It only has one speaker, but that's enough if you don't expect "hi-fi"; Most people would use headphones for this anyway. So far it seems to be holding the signal well, which is an important consideration for me as a public radio station, while having adequate signal strength, can be crowded out on any channel by larger commercial stations. Side. AM strength could be better, but AM is a bit of an afterthought on most receivers, regardless of size. (We have a simple comparison test in Chicago - WBBM AM-780 and WBBM FM 105.9 broadcast simultaneously. "BBM AM usually sounds stronger in my car, an FM station usually sounds stronger indoors; this radio is no exception, but ok. ) Overall I am very satisfied, especially at this price. If you are looking for a very basic, functional radio and simplicity is more important than visual appeal, I would wholeheartedly recommend this Sony ICF-38. Note that while Revain is priced in line with other providers, it's much easier not to pay additional shipping costs through SuperSaver or Prime.
