Big size good sound does the job

I bought this radio for my elderly mother who wanted a small radio to carry around but she also wanted one better sound than a tiny pocket transistor radio. This model hit the sweet spot between a tiny pocket radio and the radio on her kitchen table. She reports that the controls are easy to use and the stations are easy to see. She appreciates the tone switch and the overall sound of this radio. She laughed when she saw how far the antenna reached, but turns out she didn't have to take it off…

Seems to have improved despite being made in China.

Sony ICF36 radio has been with us for many years. Nice little radio with decent sound and the ability to run on AC or batteries. This served us well, but after a while the channel selector began to show signs of wear - sometimes it was difficult to select a band before tuning. In addition, two TV channels are no longer relevant (the radio is not to blame). We considered buying the ICF38, a radically more modern version, with no TV or weather channels but still with powerful sound and the…

Good sound bad looks

I had a sleek Sony radio/remote weather receiver, clutch size and shape, white, with buttons that I really liked. Unfortunately, television is no longer transmitted wirelessly, so Sony has apparently decided to abandon this model altogether. When he died I had hopes for him. The sound is better. Everything else is worse. It's black, bigger, boxy and ugly - it looks like it was designed in 1973. It doesn't do anything at all for the space it's in. Your car, so if a station gets boring, just…

Radio for everyone and for no one.

Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio (Black) Pros: Best AM reception ever 22 stations from New York? Wow! 1. Four AA batteries/rechargeable or standard.2. Powerful 4.5 inch speaker with high quality sound that can be listened to for hours even with tone control. 3. Housing made of high-impact PBS plastic. 4. Retractable handle (although the ICF-38 does not have a belt and hooks for shoulder hanging). 5 LED tuning lamp is very useful, plus a very bright neon colored tuning string (easy to dial even…

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Not as good as advertised

I had the popular Sony ICF-S10MK2 small pocket radio for many years and it has served me well. However, sometimes you just want something bigger and heavier that works at least as well. Sony's ICF38 is almost as popular, and while it doesn't look pretty or stylish, it has everything you need: AM/FM with red tuning light for both bands, a foldable antenna, which I rarely need around town; Handle that slides out on the back. It's the epitome of "form follows function": I was able to charge four…

Good Radio with Touch Volume Control

This is a reliable, basic "old school" radio, just what I was looking for. Reception is excellent, sound quality is good, and the materials/construction feel good (they don't look/feel "cheap"). However, I have one complaint that might be a problem for some people (and is actually very important to me). I use the radio in the office, so I have to keep the volume very low (and I have to turn it up/down regularly). It's SUPER touchy on this radio. In fact, I often have trouble turning the volume…
