Too bright at high volume UPDATED.

Updated 2/2020 I bought a tube preamp with tone controls because I found the highs too bright (as I mentioned). Disabling the treble control on the preamp changed the world. I use Klipsch RP600M speakers (supposed to be 96dB) so I never turn this amp up more than halfway. It has a good soundstage and separation between instruments and voices. The biggest concern for me is the choice of lamps. It's a fairly unknown model and just looking at replacements I can't find much to choose from. I wanted to try roller tubes, but it looks like I'll buy them in Russia (unless I want to replace them with the same Chinese tubes that are currently in the machine). It's just something to think about. (Original post): I bought this tube amp because it has a subwoofer output. The sound is excellent up to about the mid-range, then it gets too bright in the highs. He listened with speakers and headphones to make sure it wasn't just the speakers. The downside of this amp is the lack of tone controls so I can't roll off the high frequencies. I'm going to buy a tube preamp with a tone control to see if that fixes the problem. If this doesn't fix the brightness then unfortunately I will be returning it. I really want to keep this little amp as it really expands the soundstage and really enhances the vocals.

Pros
  • Great build
Cons
  • Dumped
