A good product, more pros than cons.

I have been looking at this lens and the evaluations that have been written about it for a long time, and I have been debating whether or not to take it to replace Keith. As a direct consequence of this event, I found myself in possession of an extra 20,000 gold coins, and my irrational urge to play with shiny new toys ultimately triumphed over my more rational impulses, so I bought this lens. With some experimentation and direct comparison with 18-55 and 18-135 I am able to say the following about it: Yes. The lens is superior in every way to the lenses that come with the kit. A little better contrast, a little more accurate focusing, a little better colors, and clearer photographs, but not because of the quality of the optics themselves; rather, it is because it has a better stabilizer. Even under challenging settings, where the 18-55 is beginning to produce blurry photographs, the 15-85 continues to produce sharp images. There is a wide angle, and it is already possible to take selfies with this lens. (This is important for me because I frequently travel alone in remote areas.) There is an ultrasonic motor, and focusing on it is really very quiet. The lens itself is very securely fastened, and there is no play or dangling in any part of it. In spite of all of this, I must admit that after making the purchase, I was a little dissatisfied with the product. This was due to the fact that the quality of the photographs that I took with it did not significantly exceed that of the Keith that I typically use. Indeed, he is a bit better than Keith in everything; nevertheless, this little improvement in everything does not, in my opinion, justify the amount that he charges. And, indeed. He is somewhat ponderous. heavier than 18-135, inclusive.

Pros
  • + Flexibility + High-quality EF-S optics + Broad Angle + Rapid and Precise Focusing
Cons
  • - The cost - The total mass
