I use Toshiba 1GB external drives for data storage and backup. Although they last a long time, they sometimes fail - i.e. no light inside, dead disc. I recently found out that it's mostly bad contacts/a blown tiny fuse in a socket inside the case. Youtube shows several ways to fix them with fine soldering (a skill beyond my salary). But when I removed the small circuit board, I noticed that there was a SATA connection on the other end (are these the same drives used in the laptop? Sure, it looks like it). So I trimmed the case a bit to fully expose the SATA socket, plugged in the cable and voila! - The hard disk is working properly. I will use it as a "secondary" backup. I gave "quality of material" three stars as it would be nice if the cord was a few inches longer. very happy buyer.
