Designed to fail. In thirteen years I have bought up to two RuffWeather units because of the same opening and many valves. The outer valve barely survives up to a year while the inner one can last 3-4 years. Four years ago I made my own external valve out of Plexiglas and a piano hinge. He just collapsed. The inner hatch has gradually fallen apart over the past year. I have 3 large dogs and a dinker dog. But as nobody makes a similar pet door with greater durability, we are the prisoners of this mediocre product. I'm a prisoner of the ideal because my hole only fits one of them. And Ideal laughs at the bank every time they sell a 50-cent valve for $30.
