Keep the old valve. Install the new valve behind the old valve. This extends the life of the new valve and also creates a better seal. I have 2 valves (four total) on either side and they work great. This is a good product in terms of cost and durability. The fit was perfect.

Pros
  • Easy to install
Cons
  • Unreliable

Overpriced and doesn't fit

Considering the absurd cost of these replacement wings I expect them to be perfect. Over the years with three dogs we have had to change the flaps more than once. Every valve we've replaced has always been ridiculously expensive and a perfect fit. This latest sash is 1/8" to 1/4" shorter. There's no point in having an extreme weather door with a huge gap at the bottom to let frosty air into my house.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

A PAIR for sale doesn't mean what you think.

I bought this (set) of items and paid significantly more because the seller advertised (A PAIR) with TWO valves instead of one. Like other customers, I received one leaf for the perfect pet door, not two as advertised. Contacted the seller twice with this complaint, no response. Don't waste your money buying Ideal Pet Products XL Mutes from this seller thinking you will get two as advertised. You will not.

Design obsolete

Designed to fail. In thirteen years I have bought up to two RuffWeather units because of the same opening and many valves. The outer valve barely survives up to a year while the inner one can last 3-4 years. Four years ago I made my own external valve out of Plexiglas and a piano hinge. He just collapsed. The inner hatch has gradually fallen apart over the past year. I have 3 large dogs and a dinker dog. But as nobody makes a similar pet door with greater durability, we are the prisoners of…

The weakest link is unreinforced holes

I've had this door for about 12 years now. The door frame is beginning to wear out - chips on the bottom edge, loss of magnets. The original valves lasted about 8 years. Exchanged ones have always been torn into holes for about 18 months. The holes must be reinforced in some way to withstand the stress of a large dog (60lb lab) breaking through the door. At $30 per door every 18 months, after three doors I could replace almost the entire door. This is not an economical product but I feel…

Cons
  • So far so good

Oh, perfect pet supplies. I don't know what to say. I think you can be worse than AA batteries. Did you really expect your double leaf door to only last 6 months before the first leaf needs replacing? Would you consider making two sets of replacement doors at a reasonable price because of course you would find in your extensive product testing that the second door would fail in just a month? Problem changing the valve. My dogs occasionally run through the door like it's a time portal and…

PERFECT FIT - IT TAKES FIFTEEN MINUTES TO INSTALL BOTH FLAPPERS

So far so good. Received two replacement leaves for our RUFF WEATHER pet door. The old ones were decommissioned after ten years in which two 60-pound dogs often walked through them at full speed. It's time to replace them. I ordered TWO replacement shields (they come individually in a box) and they were delivered today. It took me fifteen minutes to remove the old pair and install the new ones (eight screws total). They fit perfectly and certainly look way better than a ripped and bent old…

They don't carry themselves well. And they raised the price!

They are a little (much) fragile. I keep having to buy them because the top holes that hold them in place stretch and then the valve doesn't stay straight and the bottom where the magnets are wears out. Then the shutters do not close completely. For the cost of replacing the leaves, you can buy a completely new door. Jump ahead a few years. So, I'm back here to buy flaps. They are too fragile and expensive to replace. I confess my door faces west and my dog WALLS through the door sometimes…

WARNING: This PAIR may contain fewer than 2 units.

I don't know how several sellers are dealing with this but when I made the purchase the item said PERFECT PET PRODUCTS, EXTRA LARGE REPLACEMENT DOOR SHAPERS FOR WEATHER PET 9 3/4" X 17" (ONE PAIR) Keyword: PAIR Well, I take my box, open it and sure enough, there is a box inside. Phew, I think to myself. The box proudly says "THIS BOX CONTAINS ONE (ONE) ONE VALVE" with lids and all. Brilliant. It also has a sticker that says (ONE PAIR), see the picture. BUT? I looked up the word "pair" in my…
