Lately we have been experiencing alternating power surges and blackouts due to the failure of the technical line leading to our house. We lost several devices and other items due to voltage issues. Luckily, the utility covered most of our $4,000 loss since the problem was with their hardware. However, our computers and HDTVs were protected by surge protectors that "gave their lives" to power surges, but protected the electronics the way you hoped!
